What's Up at the Family Network

As with the changing seasons (the reason so many of us love New England - even the cold and snow, right?) so are the changes due at our Family Network.

We are still anxiously awaiting to hear from the state as to what our funding situation will look like come the new fiscal year starting July 1st! It's not hard to imagine that our budget will be the same and maybe even less, given the state of our state. With that in mind, the Assabet Valley Collaborative - our fiscal agent, is possibly considering moving the AVA Family Network into the building (the old Bigelow School on Orchard St.) that they are currently renting from the city of Marlboro. The move would free up most of our $20,000+ rent which could then be put into programming and services for families, something that we have worked so hard to maintain. It means a lot of work to actually move and then the process of settling into a new "home." I've always felt that the space/place is important BUT not as important as the incredible families that occupy it. YOU all make the FN such a wonderful and amazing PLACE! As soon as we get more information from the state, we will get the word out through playgroups, workshops, email and the website.

This next change is one that I personally have been struggling with. I have made the decision to leave the Family Network at the end of June. My journey of 12 years here at the FN has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. My own family, over the years, has been involved here at the FN which has allowed my "two lives" to blend in such a special way. As my children have grown and now have lives of their own, I realize that I too have the opportunity to change. My husband and I are looking to make some major life changes in the next few years which will hopefully involve long term community service either here in the states or out in the greater world. Since I never do anything without due process, I still plan on being "around" after I leave so I can "wean" myself slowly from this heartwarming community. I will also be very committed to making any and all transitions as smooth as possible. To all the many families that I have had the honor and the pleasure to connect with and get to know over all these years, you will always be with me in heart and spirit.

Hooray!!! It's time to get OUTSIDE!!!

"Fun Activities" that you can do almost anywhere, anytime

Playing outside is naturally fun for your child. Below are a few ideas to get you started with some outdoor fun now that the weather is turning nice and warm.

Bugs - Go on a bug hunt in your yard or at the park. Can you find a parade of ants? Do you see a grasshopper? Find a harmless bug and use a bug catcher to examine them up close. Talk about its color, see if it has wings, count the legs, and then let it go. Get an insect book from the library and see if you can find out what kinds of bugs you've found! Why not read Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Busy Spider?

Running games - Take advantage of what your child loves to do naturally, run. Take turns running behind, in front of, and side by side one another. Run holding hands, run backwards, run from one tree to another, or run while holding a pinwheel or a kite and watch it spin and fly. The possibilities are endless. Keep the game going by having your child hop on one foot, walk on all fours, or roll around.

Rock collection - Little ones love to pick things up. Let them start a rock collection. Collect rocks of different sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. Give your child a basket or box to keep their collection in. Once they have collected several rocks decide what you would like to do with them. Paint and glitter them, glue them into a rock "sculpture," toss them into a pond and make a splash, create a continuous growing rock pile in the backyard (how big do you think you can get it?)

Give your child's communication a boost with the following tips:

Talk to your child about the obvious. Point out what you are doing and what your child is doing. For young children you might label simple objects or familiar actions. For older children point out more abstract concepts like feelings.

Build on what your child is saying. Repeat or acknowledge what your child has said and expand on it. For example if a young child said, "Ball," you might say, "Red ball. You want the red ball."

Be quiet sometimes. Allow your child time to respond to what you have said. Also allow them quiet time to experiment with sounds and sentences.

Read and sing to your child. Both activities provide wonderful opportunities to learn new vocabulary and experiment with language.

Spring Clothing Exchange

You do not need to "add to the pile" in order to take items home. We do ask that the clothing be clean and in usable shape and ONLY up to size 6.

What's Up at the Family Network...

I am thrilled and so pleased to announce that our December Fundraising efforts brought in $5,520! Thanks to everyone who was able to give. This amount combined with our previous on-going donations gives the FN a total of $8,000. We have successfully raised the $2,130 to maintain our space and still have some left to "play" with. Our Advisory Council has begun to make decisions as to what programming the FN will be able to provide and bring back. If you have any thoughts, ideas and requests please let a Council member or Rosemary know and we'll see what we can do! Check out the activities listed on the newsletter insert and Animal Adventures on the back page.

In addition to our own funds, I am so overjoyed to announce the $1,000 donation from the Northboro Jr's Women Club. These funds are allowing the FN to bring back our Friday Drop In music program. We are so pleased to have their support for such a widely used and positive activity. It's a great way for so many to participate in such a fun activity! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

During the past few weeks, our FN, along with all the other 42 FN across the state wrote letters to the Governor, our legislators and the Board Members of Early Education and Care. We sincerely hope this effort will educate our leaders as to what exactly happens here and that they will then understand our value and keep us in the budget. In the coming months I will do my best to keep everyone posted and I'll be sure to let you know when we need your help. Thanks to everyone who came through with a letter!

The past two years we have been very lucky to have the same folks take a lead and last year those few did most of the work! PLEASE don't let that happen again. Animal Adventures

Once again, the wonderful and exciting critters from Animal Adventures will visit us to get up close and personal. If you have a child under 2, please think about how well they will do sitting for an hour to view the animals.

We will be offering two shows so you can choose what would be best for you. Reservations for this family event will be accepted on Saturday, February 7th. Space is limited, so call early!

Playspace Reminders:

Now that the winter months are here and the playspace becomes busier...

Please help us to keep your space clean and safe for you and the children. Think about treating this space as you would if you were at a friend's house!!!

CLEANING UP/TIDYING THE ROOM: We have lots of fun material for children to explore, but it can NOT be out at the same time. Once your child is finished playing with something, work with them and model how to clean up and put something away before moving on to the next play item. If other children are playing in the area, you can still put one or two things away!

FOOD AND DRINKS ONLY AT THE TABLE: Even if they are spill proof, all cups and food MUST be kept at the tables. Adults - we have put up a shelf by the snack tables and sink area for YOUR cups as well. Please help yourself to juice and snacks but wash your dishes and wipe down the table. Please NO FOOD or DRINKS in the music room!

If you see something that is not safe, fee free to let a parent know how the playspace works. They may be new and not know or are not aware of how the room works. Or, if you or another parent are struggling with a situation between children don't be afraid to talk it out and work together to come up with a plan. Children will often respond better to someone they don't know. Working with someone could help everyone out!

We love to see parents connecting and talking with each other, but we need parents to be aware of and attentive to their children. More than one child needing different attention or two children in different directions? Ask someone if they are comfortable with "keeping an eye" on your little one for a moment until you are in a better place.

If Eliza or Rosemary are not in the rooms at the moment, please come to the office and we'd be happy to lend a hand with a situation or offer direction and suggestions with a concern or issue.

Brrr! It's cold outside!

Tired of staying inside and thinking of activities to do with your children? Try some of these out!

1. Make an obstacle course out of your living room! Use couch cushions, large sheets over chairs to make tunnels, paper towel tubes to roll small cars through, music to dance to, bean bags or balls to toss and whatever else you can find in the house. This will get your children moving and you will all have fun in the process.

2. Play freeze dance to music! Have your children dance to music, and when it stops they freeze! You can take pictures of your children in silly positions to show them later, or video tape them!

3. March in a band! Children can use pots or Tupperware to bang, paper towel rolls for horns and containers you have around the house for shakers. You can use paper cups, old yogurt containers, plastic bottles (water or soda) or coffee cans. Have the child decorate the container and then fill it with rice, beans or pasta. Use a small cloth or plastic wrap for a top if you don't already have a lit and tie it on with ribbon or rubber bands. Then you are ready to march!

4. Have a fashion show with dress up clothes or your old clothes! Try for the silliest costume or for different jobs.

Letter Writing Campaign

Dear Families,

As Governor Deval Patrick looks at what to include and how to balance the Fiscal Year 2010 Massachusetts state budget, it is critical that he knows how important the Massachusetts Family Network is and how MFN impacts and benefits families. It is up to us to show the Governor, through our letters, our emails, and our faxes, what the Massachusetts Family Network is and what the Family Network does.

Below you will find a suggested letter format. When you are writing, please be sure to include the following: a) Your name and address, b) the ages of all of your children, c) our FN name: Assabet Valley Area FN, d) the line item from the governor's budget (Massachusetts Family Network Programs - line 3000-7050 Family Support and Engagement), and e) your own personal story.

Once you have composed your letter, please send them to us at the FN by the end of this week/early next week. While we plan to have letters for: a) Governor Deval Patrick, b) your local State Representatives, and c) each member of the Early Education and Care Board of Directors, if you wish it is acceptable to simply address them: To Whom It May Concern.

What's Up at the Family Network...

I have good news and bad news to share with you all. First the bad news: As with many of the state funded programs, the Massachusetts Family Networks have been told to cut their budgets. Our FN budget will be cut by 21.5% or $28,811.29, which drops our $134,006 budget down to $105,194.71. This is no easy task since we have been level funded for the last 6 years! With help from some of the Advisory Council members we have come up with the following cuts, which means the following changes to our program.

Staff salary and hours have been cut, we can no longer contract with anyone to provide parenting workshops, we will no longer be able to pay for child care providers so our child care may become very limited since we'll rely on volunteers, and we will not be able to offer the community based activities such as Squeaky Sneakers, Mr. Kim or Friday's drop in music with Mr. Mike to mention a few. Our supply line only holds funds for limited postage and we will no longer contract for once a week cleaning. We no longer have funds for printing so we will not make newsletters available in the community and we have severely cut back on our mailing list since we are now copying off a very basic newsletter ourselves.

The Good News is we are still HERE. Our playspace and the extra room across the hall will still be here for families with the help of our previous donations! It was decided that we need the extra space to allow for programs that may be developed with parent input, energy and assistance. We will try our hardest to provide a number of parent/child activities for everyone and we ask that anyone who has something to offer PLEASE step forward and share! Our parenting workshops may be fewer but Eliza and I will do our best to bring information to you and we will outreach to parents and others who could provide presentations for free, as our facilitator for our upcoming Parenting Journey has done. We will be able to bring back our Single Parent Meeting held once a month with the support of a community group and I look forward to other opportunities which may come about in this manner.

What we need from all of you is your SUPPORT if you are in a position to help. For those who aren't, not to worry because there will always be people here for you. Your support can come in so many different ways. We'll need volunteers to help with child care, creative and energetic folks to come up with activities and programs like Alex's and Darleen's Happy Trails program this fall, and boxes of crackers, bottles of juice and diapers. Anyone have a connection to a printer or big copy machine to help us copy off 400 newsletters?? Back up cleaning crews, meals for the Parenting Journey program... if you have time and a chance to share a talent, ability, or connection let Rosemary know, PLEASE!

The last thought I'll leave you with is a notice of an upcoming mailing that you will receive. Long before these cuts were announced, our Advisory Council decided to hold a direct mailing fundraiser to maintain and increase our programs - now more than ever! With the shift in economic times I realize that this will not be an option for many of you but please know that it's okay! I truly believe that giving comes in different ways and times. Sometimes the gift of giving is as simple as being here and sharing yourself, your children, your stories, and your joys with others because without families coming together, we would not be the wonderful Family Network that we are!

Once again the Family Network is offering parents an opportunity to "use" the Family Network as a way to speak with children about the idea of giving and sharing by doing a Toy Swap.

If your child is old enough, 3 and up, you may want to begin a discussion about passing toys along to others at this special time of year. Let your child look through their toys and decide what they would like to pass on. Or, you may want to dive into the pile without your child's input and participation so that you can make room for other, upcoming items.

Items can begin to come into the Family Network starting November 10th.

Welcome to our new Lottery Registration Process!

Enclosed in the upcoming newsletter is a green registration form, which must be completed in full. Please mail the form to the AVAFN, 169 Pleasant St, Marlboro , MA 01752
OR drop it off at the same address between August 25 and September 5th. The FN is closed the week of Aug 25th for cleaning and fall prep work but mail will be received. All registration forms must be received no later than Friday, Sept.5th 2:00 pm to be entered into the lottery.

Members of the Lottery Monitoring Committee (see below) will be assisting with and overseeing the lottery which will be held on Monday, September 8th at 9:00 am. Names will be drawn randomly and families will be entered into one parent/child group or placed on a waitlist.

Families will receive a phone call only if their first program choice is closed or they are placed on a waitlist. PLEASE REMEMBER what you chose as your first choice. We will NOT call you if you get into your first choice. You will get a call to confirm your secondary choices.

Once again, our annual "HALLOW-WEEKEND" PARTY(new name for this year since it’s on Nov. 1st!), can only be held if we get enough people to assist with preparation and facilitation of events on the day.

12 Week - Personal Safety Lessons for Preschoolers
Tues. Sept.16 -Dec.2 3:30 to 4:30 at the FN

Any child could be in a situation where someone or something makes them feel bad, sad or scared, from day to day situations to the more extreme concern of sexual abuse. This general safety curriculum will give your child the words, skills, practice and confidence to stay safe in any and all situations, at any time and place. They will learn proven "tools", on a week-to-week basis, to use in place of being scared, confused, or threatened. After a 15-20 min. interactive session with the facilitator, everyone will come back together to reinforce the information with fun activities. Younger siblings will be able to stay in the playroom with parents.

Children must be at least 3 yrs. at the start of this class.
Mandatory parent meeting will be held on Thurs. Sept 11th 6:30 to 8:00.

Look for someone from the FN (we’ll be wearing our FN T-shirt) at the food/picnic area and we’ll pass a FN "apple" to your child to wear so other families will have the chance to meet and connect with each other.

Parent Child Home Program

The Parent Child Home Program (PCHP) is a nationally based program that provides innovative, home based literacy activities. Trained home visitors visit families with young children twice a week for 2 years. During play sessions with the parent and child, the parents learn how to become their child’s first teacher. The books and toys used are gifts to the family.

Families may join the program if they:
* Have a child between the ages of 12-36 months
* Would like to grow in learning how to use books and play with their child
* Are willing to participate in weekly home visits during the school year (September to May)
* Can commit to a 2 year program
* Meet the financial eligibility criteria

If it’s sprinkling or looks like it’s going to rain, please assume that the playgroup will be canceled for that day. Since the playground/park has space, you do not need to pre-register to attend. ACTIVITIES FOR THE SUMMER....

Treasure in a Bottle: At the first glance, this homemade toy may look like nothing more than a bottle of rice, but roll it once or twice, and a host of hidden objects will appear before your eyes.

Materials: a clean, clear plastic soda bottle, uncooked rice and trinkets, such as beads, buttons, charms, plastic insects.

Remove the label from the soda bottle. Gather a bunch of trinkets and put them in the bottle. Add the uncooked rice to fill the bottle two thirds of the way, then tightly screw on the cap. Shake well to conceal the objects. Now your child can twist and turn her toy to see how many treasures she can spot inside. (Note: Objects such as coins and pebbles tend to gravitate into the middle, while lightweight plastic beads, buttons and trinkets are easier to spot.)

Drop in the Bucket: Your kids can design their own backyard water sculpture with a delightful burble of its own.

Materials: disposable muffin and bread tins, a nail, a tomato stake, pushpins, a bucket and water.

Carefully punch several holes in the bottoms of each tin with the nail. Attach the tins to the stake with pushpins stuck through the sides. Set the stake in the ground and place a bucket at the base. Fill the top tin with water and listen as the water moves from container to container evoking the sound of rain falling on a tin roof.

Instant Stickers Kids: can never have too many stickers, and here’s a fun way to keep your family well supplied.

Materials: pictures from old magazines, comic books, or gift wrap, flavored gelatin, water, small paintbrush.

Cut a bunch of pictures from old magazines, comic books, or gift wrap. Then dissolve 5 teaspoons of flavored gelatin in 2 teaspoons of boiling water (adults only). With a small paintbrush, coat the backs of the cutouts with a thin layer of gelatin solution. Let dry, and the stickers are ready to lick and stick.

What's Up at the Family Network...

HEADS UP! Big changes are on the way for our registration process for parent/ child activities and playgroups this fall.

We’ll be moving to a LOTTERY SYSTEM in hopes that we will make our process even more parent friendly than calling from home! Families will fill out and return a program registration form that will be returned/mailed back to the FN by a specified date. Once the Lottery drawing takes place, families who did NOT receive their first choice will be called. Let’s hope this cuts down on our limited phone technology and makes for an easier process for us all.

Every summer we offer our "Getting Involved/Leadership Meeting" to interested people who are looking to participate on a different level, use skills and talents, offer time and energy. Examples of possibilities include facilitating playgroups, becoming an Advisory Council Member, fund-raising, coordinating family events, taking a lead on a project such as our lending library or new births/families outreach as well as offering new ideas.

This Family Network is able to offer so much because of the incredible parent input. Without your parent power, through your thoughts and actions, we couldn’t possibly do all the work needed to keep the network as wonderful as it is. Please consider coming to one of the meetings (see details on blue events page in the newsletter, or elsewhere on this website - search tag, Leadership Meeting).

A Note from Rosemary...

THANK YOU to everyone who called Senator Resor to express their views about potentially losing our FAMILY NETWORK. We did get our funding back because our legislators heard our voices. However, once again we are level-funded, which really translates into a cut since the cost of running the program has increased. Our budget this year is short $5,000 to run our programs. Many of you may not know the state does not allow us to charge for our wonderful programs. We strongly believe all families need "a family network" and should be able to participate regardless of their financial status. That is what makes us SO VERY SPECIAL—the amazing give and take of friendship, support and the commonality that we share; raising and parenting young children!

We have come to a point, however, that we need to ask for your financial support to continue all of the wonderful programs and workshops. You may have had the opportunity to participate in one of our children’s programs, enjoy our open play space, or attend one of our family events throughout the year, such as our recent trip to Davis Farmland. On the other hand, you may have participated in one of our parenting workshops and have appreciated the wonderful information and support, as well as free childcare provided. We now ask you to consider donating any amount to help us maintain the variety of topics covered.

Our doors will always be open for families to connect, children to play, and for parents to get information and support, but our programs will become limited unless we raise the needed funds. If you are able, please refer to the "giving guide" inside the current newsletter.

Toddler/Convertible Car Seats: The FN always has families looking for these car seats. If your child has outgrown theirs and the seat is under 6 years old, never in an accident, and has the paper label intact with the model name and number…..we would be so happy to connect it with another family! Second Annual Family Fun and Resource Fair

Where: the gymnasium at the Kane Elementary School at 520 Farm Road in Marlborough
Who should attend? Families with children ages 0-5

The Fair is free and open to all. Families will have an opportunity to talk to child-care providers and pre-school centers, as well as obtain information from area family-focused businesses and organizations. There will be lots of free prizes and giveaways.

Spring Clothing Exchange

Are you looking to pick up or donate gently used children's clothing in time for spring?

Come stop by the Family Network to drop off children's clothes (ONLY! up to size 6) and/or pick some out! You do not need to "add to the pile" in order to take items home. We do ask that the clothing be clean and in usable shape.

Tables will be up for the exchange April 21-May 16, Mon-Fri 8am-7pm. We will be accepting clothing now until May 9th.

The VEHICLE FAIR is coming on June 14th at the Assabet Valley Technical School parking lot. Always a fun and active morning for everyone!

VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED…without your assistance events like this could never happen.

We have lost our long time "experts" Celeste Burns & Maura Jones so WE NEED SOMEONE to step up TO COORDINATE this wonderfully fun event. Celeste and Maura have everything to pass along to make the task easy and ready to go. Once we get a person to coordinate and organize we will enlist a few other parents to help with making the phone calls to the vehicle owners - something you can do on your schedule from home. "End of the Year" Luncheon

Community Partnership for Children (CPC)

What is Community Partnership for Children (CPC)?
Community Partnership for Children, or CPC, is a grant program funded through the Dept. of Early Ed & Care that focuses on families with children 2.9 to 5 years.

Childcare Assistance for Working Parents
Its main purpose is to assist working parents with childcare fees. Unlike other subsidized programs, this opportunity is open to many families struggling with weekly childcare payments. A family of 4 can make up to $86,208 (gross) and will receive assistance on a sliding fee scale.

Community Wide Events & Activities
Aside from offering direct assistance, the CPC works with the AVA FN and other programs to provide fun and educational activities and events for all families in the communities.

Community PLAYGROUPS at Early Intervention

The Family Network is pleased to promote openings in the Community Playgroups at Early Intervention for children 6 to 36 months old. All groups are run with teachers and therapists. In some of the groups, as the children play and interact, parents are offered the chance to meet separately in a group, for discussion that is lead by a facilitator. TIPS: I went to the FN Parent Workshop, "Taking the Rush Out of the Hour" and was interested in something the presenter offered. After looking them over, I felt it would be a great thing to share with everyone! We discussed how to slow down the mealtime so everyone could relax and actually eat and enjoy each other’s company and she offered the following item:"Question cards" to use to start and keep a conversation going since by the end of the day, everyone is tired and brain dead! You can get these cards through Amazon and they are called- Food for Talk: Bringing Families Together One Conversation at a Time! By Julienne Smith.

We are pleased to announce that, at the start of our program, we have nine people who have signed up to offer assistance and help to others. This is a great start but we WELCOME more folks who could offer a little bit of themselves to help another. If you’d like to know about Helping Hands, please call Rosemary at the FN and she’ll answer all your questions.

Now that we are ready to promote our ability to help, we need all of you to help spread the word.
